Mohair Gravy

Celebrating 10 years of exhilaration & inspiration.

What can one say about Mohair Gravy? The inimitable duo of Captain Codfish (Micah Shelton) and Admiral Essenborscht (Dakota Witzenburg) have been at it for quite some time now. Just what “it” is varies depending on to whom you talk. Dedicated listeners of their early radio program, also titled Mohair Gravy, would “...stay up until very late at night to witness the itchy liquid oozing curiously from (their) stereo(s).”1 Guests of their events and performances regularly approach the custom built “Gravy Boat” to testify and laud the Captain and Admiral on their skill and artfulness with praise such as, “When I'm able to elbow my way through the crowd and get down front at a Mohair Gravy show I feel like we are one--like The Gravy is spinning records for me and only me--like I am the only person in the room. It's magical.”2

A Mohair Gravy evening can range from bossa nova to polka to Lenny Dee to the Lennon Sisters to Buck Owens to Mongo Santamaria to Art Van Damme the Lover Man, but it always begins with Also Sprach Zarathustra. This larger-than-life composition by Richard Strauss is familiar to many as the title theme of the film "2001: A Space Odyssey" directed by the late Stanley Kubrick. This grandiose masterpiece has been with Mohair Gravy from the beginning. Strauss' opening is a masterly stroke and it is easy to imagine the German composer writing it while dreaming of the Captain and Admiral in their peach ruffles. It is truly a fitting entree to what is always an epic night of music and entertainment.

Mohair Gravy is available for and has hosted parties of all sorts: bar mitzvahs, bat mitzvahs, record listening parties, art openings, weddings and DJ battles

“You people are what students of the irrational call 'Hyper-gods'.”3
